To document the restoration and repair of the Bristol Channel Cutter "Sea Star", now "Rose", following damage suffered when she sank in 17 feet of water in the Galveston harbor in Sept 2008 Hurricane Ike.
Sea Star is Bristol Channel Cutter Hull no 76 built by Sam L Morse Shipyard in 1987. On September 13th, 2008 Hurricane Ike wiped out most of the sailboats tied up to E dock at the Galveston Yacht Basin. Sea Star was forced over the Harbor wall by the 17 foot storm surge and the other vessels on the dock that wiped each other out that night. With her Starboard side stove in along most of her length she sank in 14 feet of water. Two weeks later the insurance company fished her out, declared her a total loss, paid me the full (under insured) value and gave me 30 days to buy the wreck or turn over the title. After much hmming and hawing I decided to restore her. This blog is meant to document the restoration and solicit constructive critisism from other BCC and sailboat community members who know much more than I about boat restoration and retrofitting BCCs.
